Fishing
The Lehigh River is 107
miles long and the largest tributary of the Delaware
River. It's headwaters start in the Pocono Mountains of
Northeastern
Pennsylvania. The river here is more a trout stream bearing little
resemblance to it's middle and lower stretches. After leaving the
bottom
release of Francis Walter Dam, the river begins to assume it's
"Big Water"
character. And it is big water certainly by eastern standards. It
reminds one
of the Madison River more than other east coast fisheries.

Flowing through Lehigh Gorge State Park, the river picks up a
number of
feeder streams. Many of them hosting wild trout populations. This
is a
beautiful and isolated stretch of the river hosting numerous
recreational
boaters and whitewater rafters in the summer months. At the bottom
end of the
Lehigh Gorge State Park, the fishing really heats up. Here the
river picks up
a number of feeders that hold trout as well as it's second
tailwater, the
bottom release from the reservoir at Beltsville State Park.

The river from Francis E. Walter through the Gorge is stocked by
the PF&BC.
>From Bear Creek to Allentown the Lehigh River Stocking
Association stocks the
river. This group is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
restoration
of the river. In the lower river you can land the following trout:
brook,
rainbow, brown and steelhead. Trout stocked by the LRSA range from
11" to 30"
and can weigh upto 14 lbs. The Association also has a fingerling
program and
these trout range in size from 3" to 6". Please practice
catch & release,
since the stocking program by the LRSA is to revitalize the
fishing in the
river. Only take what you intend to consume.
Most of the tributaries to the Lehigh River have trout
populations. If you
desire to get out of the "Big Water". Try fishing any of
these tributaries to
the Lehigh River. We can assure you that there is alot of water to
cover. So
we will see you on many return trips... enjoy.
